Customize records with fields

Add fields for information unique to your organization and arrange the record lists around your work.

Custom fields let an administrator capture organization-specific information on supported record types. The field definitions and values belong to your organization.

Add a custom field

  1. Open Settings → Customize.
  2. Choose the record type you want to extend, such as partner, product, warehouse, order, invoice, or payment.
  3. Add a label and choose a field type: text, number, date, select, checkbox, URL, email, or phone.
  4. For a select field, add the options people can choose from. Save the field.

The field is then available on supported forms for that record type. Existing records can be edited to fill it in.

Choose list columns and filters

On supported lists, use Columns to show or hide fields and Customize to adjust the layout. A custom field can be used for filtering or sorting when its definition has that option enabled.

Keep fields understandable

Use short, specific labels and avoid creating two fields for the same information. Decide who should fill in each field and whether it should be filterable before adding it to a busy list.

Custom fields change the information your organization tracks; they do not add new workflow steps or permissions. Only administrators with customization access can change field definitions.
